Welcome to the main event! We'll probably end up with around 150-250 players for our little RC in the North. Event Details: Location: Big Four Roadhouse Address: 1801 Big Four Trail SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2W1 Hall C Saturday Call Time: 8:00am (Main event starts at 9am) Sunday Call Time: 8:30am (Main event starts at 9am) Event Structure: Day 1 – Saturday: Player meeting + 8 Rounds of Swiss, 5-3 or better makes Day 2 Day 2 – Sunday: 5 Rounds of Swiss, Top 8 playoffs Event Links: MTGMelee: https://melee.gg/Tournament/View/124117 Main Event Teams Day 1 Floor/Pairings/Promos [Judge Redacted] – Team Lead (L3) (Long Break R3/Short Break R6) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R4/Short Break R7 start) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R4/Short Break R7 start) [Judge Redacted] (L5)(Long Break R5/Short Break R7 end) This team is responsible for putting up the paper pairings each round and taking them down at around 20 minutes left on the clock. At the beginning of round one please distribute a non-foil Seasoned Pyromancer promo and Golden Ticket to each player. Please be extremely mindful of keeping track of the promos as the judge manager will lose his left pinky if any go missing. Finally this team is also in charge of ensuring that judges are evenly distributed on the floor, if there is a weird clump of judges, or no one is at the bottom tables, this team is in charge of rectifying that. Stage/EOR [Judge Redacted] – Team Lead (L4)(Long Break R4/Short Break R7 start) [Judge Redacted] (L3)(Long Break R3/Short Break R6) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R5/Short Break R7 end) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R5/Short Break R7 end) This team is responsible for "ghost" prevention and ensuring that all players know that time in the round has been called. A "ghost match" is when the players are no longer at the table but the match result hasn't yet been reported. At 2 minutes left in the round I'd like this team to be done sweeping (when you start is your discretion). Please give any "ghost" matches a 99 minute time extension in mtgmelee. One member of the team should be at a common meeting spot to assign judges to tables. At zero after the time in the round announcement, I'd like to be made aware of any ghost matches. I'll call ghost matches at -2 or when we have less than 5 outstanding non-ghost matches. I also want at one member of this team by the scorekeeper at the beginning of the round to help with any potential re-pairs. This team is also responsible for coordinating the process for checking for no-shows during the player meeting. The Floor/ Pairings team won't have other tasks during this process so feel free to use the people on that team for this task. I recommend giving each judge a few rows and having that judge take the decklists of the players that didn't show up, and then staying by their rows in case any of the late players wander in. We won't be issuing tardiness penalties during the player meeting because that's stupid. After I have finished player meeting announcements have your judges bring the lists of the no-show players to the scorekeeper to drop from the event. Deck Checks [Judge Redacted] – Team Lead (L3) [Judge Redacted] [Judge Redacted] This team will be taking care of deck checks. While most lists for the main event will be in MTGMelee there will inevitably be some paper lists, please have your team available during the player meeting to collect any paper lists. General Event information: Time extensions are being input into MTGMelee only, we are not handing out small pieces of paper to the players. It is very important that the yearly forest fires happen, and if we kill all the trees by making small pieces of paper there won't be any left to burn. If you aren't on a task at 2 minutes left in the round, please find an EOR team member to be assigned to a table with a time extension (or do it yourself if you can't find someone and know how to mark yourself on the table in melee). If you are on the last table do not enter the match result for it, make sure the players do it or it ruins MTGMelee. If you have an appeal or investigation, please bring it to myself or Jon. If you have a non-tardiness game loss, a deviation or any ruling that feels complex, please bounce it off an L3+. Each round players will be given 52 minutes to both play their matches and review decklists. It's very boring to look at a decklist for 30 seconds and twiddle your thumbs for a minute and a half before you can start playing. Please watch matches of Magic. I know your phones are interesting but so is Magic. While you're walking around you can look for semi-transparent sleeves or warped foils. If someone is comboing off, make sure they have the amount of mana they say they do. If someone is spending a long time thinking, try to figure out the correct play before they do. Next, try to do some shadowing and mentoring. 0 judges on a call is bad. One judge is good, two is great and three is way too many. If you're not watching Magic try to talk to others about policy. A number of you on the event are looking for advancement or gearing up to take exams, why not ask a more experienced judge to float some policy questions your way? The Format: Make sure you're aware of the policy change to Sagas and to Cavern of Souls. (https://blogs.magicjudges.org/telliott/2024/09/26/policy-update-for-duskmourn/) Recall that presenting the incorrect decklist to an opponent is a decklist problem. (IPG 3.4) Finally Magic: Foundations is legal for constructed on Friday. Arclight Phoenix and Rakdos Aggro are both large portions of the meta right now. Things to note: if Picklock Prankster's cards are milled into exile the player can still get one of them. Arclight players might forget that Artist's Talent doesn't actually count towards their spell count for Phoenix. Rakdos is luckily fairly straightforward, no weird shenanigans come to mind with that deck. Lotus Field combo is one of the more technically challenging decks in the format, so make sure you have a vague idea of how this deck works, though it's a small portion of the meta. Main Event Teams Day 2 Floor/Pairings/Promos [Judge Redacted] – Team Lead (L3) (Long Break R3) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R3) [Judge Redacted] (L3) (Long Break R4) Stage/EOR [Judge Redacted] – Team Lead (L4)(Long Break R4) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R4) [Judge Redacted] (L5) (Long Break R3) [Judge Redacted] (Long Break R4) All short breaks will be after we cut to top 8. Anything Else: If there's anything else you have questions about either now, or on the event floor, please don't hesitate to ask! I'm excited for the event, and hope that you can also muster up the same enthusiasm for this weekend!
