Concept
I decided that I wanted to try my hand at a super anime-style, and decided that a good testing grounds would be with magic characters!
Method
At the time I began this project, Magic’s only flirt with anime-style artwork had been in the Jace and Chandra duel decks.

I had just finished Doki Doki Literature Club!, and something particularly striking about that game was the fantastic artwork. Honestly I kind of found it to be better than most other visual novels in general, and likely would’ve enjoyed the game had it simply been a normal visual novel.

Initially I did Chandra, since I wanted to take a crack at her intricate armor as depicted in her Kaladesh card.

As a bit of a fun joke, I decided to post the image on social media with an overlay making it look like it was from some kind of dating sim.

I then thought about actually working on a dating sim and whipped up some other characters such as Nissa and Liliana.

Also as my personal favorite I decided to make a Jace as well.

while I had no other large projects, I plugged away more at each character, doing other poses as is typical in dating sims, since you usually need a few different expressions, and got Nissa, Lili, and Jace done.

Reflection
While the idea of making an mtg-themed game is currently suspended due to other projects, it may be something I want to pick up in the future. In the mean time I decided to make a playmat out of it, whipping up a cute logo leaning really heavily into the dating sim aesthetic.
