Concept

For Commandfest Toronto I was tasked with putting together a booklet that outlined a bunch of the non-tournament activities occurring during the event. Notably, while the Magic set associated with the Commandfest was the Hobbit, Middle Earth Entertainment is very litigious and we ended up having to do something that felt Hobbit themed but didn't use any official Hobbit imagery. Maybe if we'd had more runway for the project we would've been able to get a more Hobbit themed booklet approved, but I was given a very short timeline to actually put something together.

Method
The first task was to establish an aesthetic, I figured an old fashioned kind of worn paper aesthetic would look good with minimalistic line art. I created the dragon for the front cover and went from there. On each page there is a ring (notably not officially the One Ring) that for a stamp when the participant has completed the section.

While many of the activities were organized by others, I had a bit of involvement in them. For instance in the Dwarves before Dawn activity I designed a custom version of werewolf for the content creator that was running the activity.

For the faction minigame I also designed the vouchers, which were on the back of food and treasure tokens.

I also got to design the Commandfest badges as well!

Another thing I needed to do was redesign the hall map into something that was visually parseable and also aesthetically pleasing.

I also worked with local artist Stephanie Strobel who was running a small event to get some of her super cute doodles in the booklet!

While most of the games were organized by others, I got to organize two of the activities in the booklet, one was this crossword, which I designed on the last day before the item had to go to print because we had an extra page. I tried getting an online tool to make one, but because of the very specific space limitations of the booklet, I ended up having to do it manually.

The thing I had the most fun doing was organizing the puzzles for the event, I had a ton of fun doing this. I made six different puzzles and scattered them across the room for people to do.

Fifth Riddle, players have to find the right key

Reflection
I really enjoyed putting together the puzzles for this one, and heard that they went over well (I was doing a judge role at the event, so I didn't have the ability to really monitor them closely). I have some ideas for future shows and am excited to implement them!
